Description
This course offers an introduction to various areas of feminist thought, including global feminism, poststructural feminism, radical feminism, cultural feminism, socialist feminism and the “third wave,” among others. Students will read a sampling of writing from theorists dedicated to advancing different types of feminist theory, and then analyze some of the possible strengths and limitations of each. The aims of the course are to acquaint students with the diversity of feminist theories, and to introduce some of the issues on which feminists differ.
A: Demonstrates outstanding ability to state and describe the key issues and debates in contemporary Gender Studies and feminist scholarship in a clear and succinct way that shows a thorough and comprehensive understanding of abstract theoretical languages;
Demonstrates outstanding ability to critically apply gender and feminist theories to the analysis of contemporary gender and sexuality issues while being highly reflexive by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of theories when formulating her/his own feminist perspective in a logically sound and creative way.
A-: Demonstrates strong ability to state and describe the key issues and debates in contemporary Gender Studies and feminist scholarship in a clear way that shows a good understanding of abstract theoretical languages with some minor mistakes;
Demonstrates strong ability to critically apply gender and feminist theories to the analysis of contemporary gender and sexuality issues while being reflexive by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of theories when formulating her/his own feminist perspective in a way that is creative but contains slight logical inconsistency.
B: Demonstrates moderate ability to state and describe the key issues and debates in contemporary Gender Studies and feminist scholarship in a way that shows a fair understanding of abstract theoretical languages with some mistakes;
Demonstrates moderate ability to apply gender and feminist theories to the analysis of contemporary gender and sexuality issues while being aware of the strengths and weaknesses of theories with some attempts to formulate her/his own feminist perspective in a way that is creative but contains moderate logical inconsistency.
C: Demonstrates limited ability to state and describe the key issues and debates in contemporary Gender Studies and feminist scholarship in a way that shows an incomplete understanding of abstract theoretical languages with major mistakes;
Demonstrates limited ability to apply gender and feminist theories to the analysis of contemporary gender and sexuality issues with slight awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of theories; No attempts are made to formulate her/his own feminist perspective or a few attempts are made in a way that is logically inconsistent.
D: Demonstrates little ability to state and describe the key issues and debates in contemporary Gender Studies and feminist scholarship in a way that shows a gravely incomplete understanding of abstract theoretical languages with major mistakes;
Demonstrates little ability to apply gender and feminist theories to the analysis of contemporary gender and sexuality issues with no awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of theories; No attempts are made to formulate her/his own feminist perspective or a few attempts are made in a way that is not understandable.
F: Unsatisfactory performance on a number of learning outcomes, OR failure to meet specified assessment requirements.

Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to 1. state and describe the key issues and debates in contemporary gender studies and feminist scholarship; 2. understand difficult founding texts of feminisms and gender studies; 3. apply feminist theories to contemporary gender and sexuality issues critically; reflect upon feminist theories and formulate their own feminist perspective.
