Description

This course is designed to enhance the overall proficiency of second-year students in the Faculty of Science in written and spoken communications. Learning topics include expository writing skills, impromptu speaking skills, and oral presentation skills. Coursework consists of practices in writing for academic purposes, expository writing tasks, and presentation work. For Year 2 students of Faculty of Science only.

 

Learning Outcome

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. use expository writing skills effectively;

2. express thoughts and opinions clearly and concisely in impromptu speeches, and

3. give presentations for general and academic purposes effectively.

Description

The course introduces the fundamental principles of biochemistry that are essential for all life science disciplines. It covers the importance of water, structure-function relationships of biomolecules (including amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids), the biochemical logic of the metabolic pathways, and an overview of metabolism with emphasis on how biomolecules interconvert into each other.

Learning Outcome

1. To appreciate the importance of water in living organism. 

2. To understand the structure-function relationships of different types of biomolecules. 

3. To understand the chemical logic (thermodynamics, mechanism, and catalysis) behind biochemical reactions. 

4. To have an overview of metabolic pathways, and appreciate how biomolecules are interconverting with each other.

Description

This course is designed for students who need to acquire the knowledge and skills of linear algebra. The course emphasizes the fundamental principles, reasoning of mathematics and also applications, but generality instead of particular usage will be the focus.

 

Learning Outcome

Students are able to

-  define and distinguish the usual concepts used in linear algebra

-  logically prove basic statements in linear algebra

-  solve problems using linear algebra, including those in an abstract setting

-  apply the methods of linear algebra to standard problems in physics, engineering, or business economics

-  appreciate the rationale and impact of linear algebra to human development in science and technology
