Description:
This course
focuses on the teaching of number and algebra in secondary school
mathematics. It concerns the basic concept of introducing unknowns and
designation of numbers by symbols, systems of algebraic equations or
equations of higher degrees, and algebraic methods that permeate through the
whole school mathematics curriculum. In this course, topics in number and
algebra in the mathematics curriculum at secondary school level are analyzed
from multiple perspectives, that is, in terms of the mathematics content
knowledge, psychology of learning, pedagogical approaches, and
epistemological relationships between mathematical concepts involved.
Emphasis is on how school students can develop their algebraic ways of
thinking gradually through the curriculum. Through different learning
activities which include the implementation of available information
technology resources, student teachers will develop their conceptual skills
and frameworks for effective instructional design in these curriculum topics.
Learning
Outcome:
By the end of
this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze students’ difficulties in
transferring knowledge of arithmetic to knowledge of algebra;
2. articulate knowledge required for
teaching the concepts and procedures in the dimension of number and algebra;
3. devise effective teaching strategies for
developing the habit of algebraic thinking.
