Description: This course
intends to provide for secondary school teachers an overview of the basic
concepts of school guidance and counselling and their applications in the
secondary school setting. Topics include: social and psychological
perspectives and the need for school guidance and counselling, basic
principles of guidance, goals and objectives of school guidance and
counselling, qualification, roles and function of professional counsellor and
guidance teacher, basic theories of counselling, individual and group
counselling, and other contemporary trends and issues in the local context.
In addition, the whole school approach, the therapeutic conditions and the
counselling process are also introduced. Learning
Outcome: 1. Demonstrate
an understanding of the basic goals, principles and objectives of school
guidance and counselling. 2. Identify
various roles and functions of teachers in school guidance and
counselling. 3. Gain
knowledge of major counselling theories and use them as a guide to understand
the social and emotional needs of students.
4. Apply basic
counselling skills and interventions to work with students and their families
in dealing with students’ socioemotional issues. 5. Identify the
conditions and counseling processes that are instrumental to growth and
changes |
