Description:
This course
gives a comprehensive insight into the principles and design of modern
digital computing systems. The course content covers elementary logic gates,
combinational logic circuits, arithmetic blocks, sequential circuits, and
finite state machines. The topics are taught in a way to illustrate how these
component blocks can be used to design a basic computer processor. A hardware
description language, namely VHDL or Verilog, will be introduced for digital
systems design. The course helps lay the foundation for learning the design
of complex digital systems. Students will learn design methodologies and use
computer-aided tools to design small and medium size digital circuits. This
course includes mandatory laboratory modules.
Learning
Outcome:
Upon successful completion of the
course, students will be able to
1. explain the operation of basic components
of a digital circuit;
2. explain how digital computers operate at
the most basic level;
3. carry out experiments on assembling and
testing basic digital circuits;
4. describe the architecture of a basic
computer processor;
5. design medium-complexity digital systems;
6. interpret the description of a digital
system using high-level languages
