Description
Linear time-invariant systems. Fourier analysis of continuous-time and discrete-time signal and systems. Laplace transform. z-transform. Feedback systems. Applications such as processing of communication signals and images, control of disk drive systems, and analysis of the stock market.

Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will have acquired the ability to:
1. appreciate that concepts of signals and systems can be used in a wide variety of disciplines and applications;
2. recognize the power of working in transform domains; to take advantage of the complementary insights and tools that these different perspectives provide;
3. recognize system properties such as causality, stability, linearity, and time invariance;
4. perform time-domain analysis of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems; in particular performing convolution in continuous and
discrete time;
5. analyze LTI systems and their properties through determination and examination of the impulse response;
6. use and compute Fourier series to analyze periodic signals and the response of LTI systems to such signals;
7. use Fourier transform methods to analyze general signals, including both aperiodic and periodic signals;
8. use frequency domain methods to analyze the effects of LTI filters on signals;
9. understand the sampling theorem and, more generally, the impact in both the time and frequency domains of sampling;
10. analyze signals and LTI systems using Laplace transforms; and
11. analyze signals and LTI systems using z-transforms.
