Description: This course
introduces students to some landmarks in the history of literature in English
from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The relationship of
literature to such concerns as urbanization, nationalism, empire, democracy,
revolution, and the rapid growth of science and technology will be
considered, together with the emergence of new female voices in literature.
Special attention will be given to the rise of Western modernity, as
reflected in the texts studied. Learning
Outcome: 1. To enjoy the
reading of literary works and find their relevance to our everyday life. 2. To
understand the close relationship between content and form, between what we
say and how we say it. 3. To be able
to assess the writers' representations of their times. 4. To be able
to connect the works of different writers from these periods with issues in
contemporary society such as alienation, authorship, gender, environmentalism
and animal welfare. |
