Description

Smart cities have been practiced in many world cities in the last decade. The advancement of technology and innovation has enabled cities to become smarter. Hong Kong also published a blueprint for smart cities. In this course, we will introduce the latest practice of smart cities around the world and discuss emerging theories and debates on smart cities.

 

Learning Outcome

Students are expected to understand the concept of smart cities and the key components of smart cities, especially those related to Hong Kong’s smart cities blueprint. More importantly, students are encouraged to take part in the building and managing smart cities in future to make our cities more livable and sustainable. After taking this course, students should be able to: 

1. Understand the rise of smart cities; 

2. Understand the main pillars of smart cities;

3. Describe how technology and innovation affect cities and our daily lives;

4. Become familiar with the latest practice of smart cities in Hong Kong;

5. Summarize the emerging theories of smart cites;

6. Develop critical thinking on the practice and goals of smart cities.

field trip 兩次,兩份field trip report 1000 10% each

課程好的地方是介紹了很多植樹活動、環保/自然相關康樂機構。好處係3cred一個禮拜只係上2小時,no tutorial

Overall不太滿意。

Description

This course aims at providing students with an overall view on nature conservation in general and Hong Kong in particular. The concepts and principles of nature conservation will be addressed from a holistic point of view, followed by an investigation of nature conservation practices and their effect on the environment in Hong Kong. The latter shall include legislation, designation and management of the protected areas. Specifically, country, marine parks and geopark are developed to protected terrestrial and marine habitats as well as the associated wildlife, and geodiversity, respectively. Threats to protected areas and their mitigation for sustainability in Hong Kong will also be addressed alongside comparison with overseas experiences. The course does not teach students how to identify the different species of plants, birds, insects, corals or rocks. Instead, it provides a framework for students to look at nature conservation from the perspective of sustainable development, that is incorporating the economic, social, environmental and institutional dimensions of development. The new initiatives of nature conservation in the 21st century in response to globalization and climate change will be addressed towards the end of the course.

Learning Outcome

Students should be able to achieve the following at the end of the course:

l   Describe and explain concepts and principles of nature conservation in local and global context;

l   Explore and discuss the process in the formation of local nature conservation policy and practices;

l   Appreciate and differentiate values and benefits of protected areas to the community;

l   Identify sustainable measures in conserving habitats and ecosystems in Hong Kong; and

l   Analyze strengths and challenges of various conservation measures applied in Hong Kong respect to sustainable development goals (especially the SDGs 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) and 15 (Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems) respectively).

Description

This course adopts an interdisciplinary approach to examining the causes and characteristics of natural hazards and their effects on human society. It aims to present an overview and analysis of human settlement, planning and policy in relation to natural hazards in the light of their socio-economic impacts. Major geological, meteorological, hydrological, and ecological hazards will be addressed from physical science perspective. The interaction between nature, society, and technology will be analysed as we discuss how people and places experience and cope with natural hazards in terms of risk assessment, reduction of vulnerability, and disaster mitigation and management, etc. While the coverage will be broad and global, case studies of threats, occurrence and consequences of natural hazards in Hong Kong and Mainland China will be emphasized.

 

Learning Outcome

1. To improve the students’ understanding of the man-environment relationship in the context of risk, vulnerability, and disaster caused by natural hazards 

2. To gain basic knowledge of geophysical concepts and principles of extreme natural events for understanding their causes, characteristics, and geographical distribution 

3. To learn how environmental risk arises from the complex interaction between the physical environment and human society, and 

4. To evaluate how social, economic, technological, and cultural factors affect the perception, prevention, and mitigation of natural hazards in different societies
