Description

This is an introductory level course on digital literacy and its applications. The course first covers basic information technology skills and spreadsheet usage. Then basic statistics and data science concepts for working with data from digital sources will be introduced. Computational thinking techniques for solving problems with data (e.g., automation, textual analysis, data visualization, etc.) will be covered. Demonstrations on solving real-life problems creatively will be provided. Case studies in social media usage will be included to illustrate how to interpret data properly and identify false information. The course focuses on hands-on practices using relevant software toolboxes, without covering the inner-working details.

 

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to

l   use spreadsheet to organize and process data;

l   describe the importance of information security and data privacy;

l   apply methods and tools to obtain and use data properly;

l   solve problems in a computational thinking style;

l   process and analyse textual data using software packages;

l   interpret and present data accurately to suit different application scenarios.

#1 Skipped a lot of fundamental concepts since the course is targeted at students with programming background, but if you have programming backgrounds then you’d probably already know a lot of the contents it discusses. Super heavy workload as a 1 cred course, unsuitable for students without any programming background. Be prepared to spend 4 hours or above each week outside class to finish its assignments.

Description

This course aims to provide an intensive hands-on introduction to the Python scripting language. Topics include the basic Python language syntax, variable declaration, basic operators, programme flow and control, defining and using functions, file and operating system interface. Specific key features of the Python scripting language such as object-oriented support, high level dynamic data types, embedding within applications etc. will be highlighted.

 

Learning Outcome

1. Be able to write, compile and execute Python programs;

2. Be able to make use of Python's object-oriented methodology;

3. Be able to design and create applications using Python modules;

4. Be able to develop embedded applications using Python.

Description

This course introduces the computer-oriented problem-solving methods and algorithm development; object oriented programming concepts; concepts of abstract data types; simple data structures; illustrative applications. The C++ programming language will be used.

 Learning Outcome

1. Be able to write, understand, compile and debug C++ programs 

2. Be able to write programs using the basic programming elements such as variables, data types, selection and looping control structures, functions, and arrays;

3. Be able to perform dynamic memory allocation and manage pointers;

4. Be able to implement and instantiate classes, and invoke methods;

5. Understand the basic concept of data encapsulation, polymorphism, and inheritance;
