Description:
The course will
begin with a discussion of the arrival of Europeans in North America and the
development of English colonies in North America and, to a lesser extent, the
West Indies. It will continue with the development of colonial society with
an emphasis on the role of race relations; the different dynamics in each
colony; and the importance of slavery. The second part of the course will go
over the deterioration of relations between England and its American colonies,
the importance of Republicanism in shaping colonists' self-understanding,
before shifting to the Declaration of Independence and the course of the war
with England, before moving on to the formulation of the U.S. Constitution
and the debates between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists.
Learning
Outcome:
1) The basic
narrative of events in North America from its "discovery" until the
1790s
2) The general
outline of the historiographical debate about the causes of the American
Revolution
3) The key
leaders of Colonial Society and of the Revolution
4) The role of
Republicanism in the American Revolution
5) The role of
racial relations in American society
In addition,
the course would focus on the following skills
1) working with
primary texts from the era
2) evaluating
competing interpretations

Description:
This course
examines the main historical events in Western Civilization from Mesopotamia
to the twentieth century. Major historical themes of the West and their
significance are introduced in order to attain a macro-historical
understanding of Western Civilization.
Learning
Outcome:
By the end of
the course, students will:

have a better understanding of the tradition and transformation of the
western history and culture;

critically think about related issues of the west;
