Description

This course provides an introduction to the various analytical techniques necessary for studying physics at university level. Topics include: vectors, rates of change and kinematics, methods for solving ordinary differential equations in mechanics and electric circuits, line integrals and multiple integrals in mechanics, partial differentiation and its applications in mechanics and thermodynamics, methods of vector calculus used in electromagnetism, and applications of infinite series and systems of linear equations in physics.

 

Learning Outcome

1.demonstrate knowledge in basic mathematical methods in physics

2.formulate simple physical problems in mathematical form, and to solve them by mathematical technique, and to interpret the results physically

3.recognize the relative importance of different physical quantities, and hence take suitable approximations in mathematical derivations

4.identify how various mathematical methods can be combined coherently in describing physical systems and solving physical problems

5.appreciate the important role of mathematics in physics, as well as its applications in various areas in physical sciences

6.generalize the applications of the mathematical methods learnt in lectures to new situations

Description
An introduction to meteorological phenomena and mechanisms. This course aims at a non-mathematical exposition of the central ideas of meteorological study. The interaction between the climate and human activities will also be discussed. Topics include atmospheric phenomena such as general circulation, storms and typhoons, forecasting, oceanic processes, El Nino and La Nina and global climate changes.

Learning Outcome
Students are expected to:
Ÿgain a perspectives of scientific approach in solving problems and how the real systems such as weather and climate can be tackled by scientific methods,
Ÿacquire some knowledge about the mechanisms of various phenomena in meteorology,
Ÿdevelop a perspective of the relations between weather/climate and the human society,
Ÿdevelop a perspective of how the environment of the earth is influenced by the interaction between different parts of Nature and human activities,
Ÿdevelop a perspective of how knowledge can be gained, how scientific way can help to analyse and make forecast among uncertainties.
Ÿaware the critical role of human race in the future of the earth,
