Description:
The main objective of this
course is to give students a general idea of Japanese cultural history and
social background of modern Japan. Guidance leading to a better understanding
of Japan will be provided.
Learning
Outcome:
1) Students are
expected to gain an understanding of the main areas of Japanese life
including work, family, gender roles, marriage, and religion. They are
expected to understand the ways in which Japanese see their own society in
terms of economic growth, Japan's place in the world, social order, and
political structure.
2) Students are
expected to understand and be able to use a variety of social theories and
perspectives in understanding Japan. They are also expected to have gained an
understanding of how these same perspectives might be used to analyze their
own society, or other societies which they may wish to study in the future.
3) Students are
expected to develop a clearer understanding of their own values regarding
work, leisure, marriage, family, love, and religion through a comparison with
the debates and competing interpretations of these values in Japan.
Remarks:
Department
Board members disagreed with the suggestion that they replace the word
'understanding' with another word such as 'identity, explain, analyze or
synthesize' as suggested by UGE.
