Description: The aim of this
course is to study games and strategies from the mathematical perspective. We
investigate the manner in which rational people interact when there are
competitions. This applies to parlour games and more importantly to economy,
social psychology, politics and business. We will introduce the great
discoveries of Von Neumann and Nash, and discuss their impact on society.
Also, we will use examples of various types of games to illustrate how some
basic mathematical methods can lead to optimal strategies for decision
making. Learning
Outcome: We expect
students to learn how to formulate real life problems that involve strategic
interaction as mathematical games, and to be able to use the appropriate
mathematical tools to study such games. We expect students to be able to: 1.
Understand
the concepts of a game, such as players, positions, moves, strategies,
information, rationality, game trees, outcomes, payoffs, zero-sum and
non-zero-sum games, Pareto optimality, equilibrium, sequential games,
cooperative games. 2.
Formulate
and solve simple matrix games, and to use them for investigating practical
situations. 3.
Appreciate
how game theory may be applied in other fields of knowledge, such as
economics, political science, biology, and how it may be applied in decision
making processes, such as auction pricing, cost allocations problems,
military planning, diplomacy. 4.
Be aware
of the aims, scope and limitations of game theory. |
