Description

This course introduces the basic principles of quantum theory and their applications to the atomic and molecular systems of interest to chemists. Topics covered include the revision of the historical background on the failures of classics physics, wave mechanics and electronic structure of atoms, chemical bond, spectroscopy, and molecular structure.

 

Learning Outcome

1. Students will have some basic understanding of the foundational principles of quantum theory.

2. Students will be able to apply quantum theory to explain the atomic and molecular structure.

3. Students will have some basic understanding of the molecular spectroscopy.

4. Students will be able to identify and solve chemical problems using appropriate methods of quantum mechanics.

#1 內容太深,會涉及很多Year2-3已學知識

#1 雖然Professor會廣東話加以輔助,但極為嚴格,會計算Attendance,上佢堂唔好遲到,佢會認得邊個成日遲到/走堂

 交功課時間極為不合理,原定24/10 present,但係17/10要求在22/10 下午17:00前交最終版本PPT,但一星期半前才收到題目,令同學時間大失預算

此外,此Professor要求極高,成日問好難嘅問題

如果你係成日遲到嗰啲人+ 唔鍾意上堂答問題嗰啲,千萬唔好揀,唔係嘅話應該Grade爛到不得了

呢一科好着重課堂表現,如果你想自保嘅話,必須要常常回應佢嘅問題,等佢認得你,個Grade有機會會靚啲

Description

This course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the approaches to solving both episodic and routine issues in our food and environment using chemical analyses. Students will learn the basic principles of analysis, including sampling, sample treatment, analyte identification and assay. Through various detailed examples, students will learn the classical and instrumental methods used in food and environmental analyses and, more importantly, the rationale for method selection. Related local and international regulations and protocols will also be discussed.

 Learning Outcome

Students are expected, for the different food and environmental analyses, to do the following:

1.         When given a method, to breakdown the procedure into the different steps of sampling, treatment, identification and assay and apply the required precautions and knowledge for the successful completion of these steps

2.         When given a sample, to understand its analytical requirements and to apply their knowledge in the selection of a more appropriate method

3.         When given a special sample having no well-known analysis methods, to suggest possible methods for its analysis

4.         When carrying out the analysis, as well as communications with clients, to know and follow the updated quality requirements for an accredited laboratory

Description

This is primarily for students in engineering faculty requiring a one-semester introductory in general chemistry at a fundamental level. It includes the study of atomic structure, bonding, periodic trends in physical properties, molecular geometry, stoichiometry, states of matter, thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, acid/base chemistry, electrochemistry and kinetics.

 

Learning Outcome

After completing this course, students should be able to: 

Incorporate connections between Chemistry and Engineering 

Understand some basic concepts of chemistry in areas related to engineering science such as nuclear chemistry, 

chemical equilibrium, thermodynamics, materials, oxidation and reduction, chemical kinetics, electrochemistry and etc. 

Develop problem solving skills in Chemistry and Engineering
