Description

Smart cities have been practiced in many world cities in the last decade. The advancement of technology and innovation has enabled cities to become smarter. Hong Kong also published a blueprint for smart cities. In this course, we will introduce the latest practice of smart cities around the world and discuss emerging theories and debates on smart cities.

 

Learning Outcome

Students are expected to understand the concept of smart cities and the key components of smart cities, especially those related to Hong Kong’s smart cities blueprint. More importantly, students are encouraged to take part in the building and managing smart cities in future to make our cities more livable and sustainable. After taking this course, students should be able to: 

1. Understand the rise of smart cities; 

2. Understand the main pillars of smart cities;

3. Describe how technology and innovation affect cities and our daily lives;

4. Become familiar with the latest practice of smart cities in Hong Kong;

5. Summarize the emerging theories of smart cites;

6. Develop critical thinking on the practice and goals of smart cities.

#1 應該係 URSP 其中一個最難明同最悶嘅 course,冇 econ 底要努力下。因為成個 course 大部分只係會跟住一本 required reading 講,我自己刨本嘢仲 effective 過佢講,尤其是係喺成個 course 都係狂講美國嘅例子而冇講香港嘅情況。TA lead tutorial 可以齋講廿分鐘就落堂,scan QR code 答兩條問題就可以唔去又完美地全取 partiLiterature review paper 有一堆人唔明要做乜導致不少人爛 grade

#1 Sylvia 雖然有特登開 office hours 畀人問 paper 寫啲乜,但係 dead air 是尷尬的。應該話佢冇諗過點樣可以講得有趣啲……

Description

Urban economic studies examines the locational choices of firms and households and their effects on the formation of cities of different sizes. The course investigates the positive and negative externalities of cities and challenges students to apply basic economic principles to resolve urban issues.

Learning Outcome

After taking this course, students should be able to: 

1. Compare and contrast patterns of spatial arrangements of firm and households in cities;

2. Identify externalities arising from the spatial arrangements of cities;

3. Develop independent and critical thinking in evaluating existing related urban economic issues; and 

4. Use economic concepts to formulate appropriate public policies to address urban issues.

#1 前半部分同城市有關,後半部分同家居設計、園林、墓地有關,內容尚算有趣,不會太深。Quiz內容係從PowerPoint度揀細節角落出題,不要理解大概內容就算,最好將d課件一張張背下來,包括百分比,地名、人名等等,就係死背,如果想靠common sense或者理解能力應付,建議唔好揀,因為如果細節位冇背到的話,一題都唔識做

Description

The pursuit of ideal living environment has long been a human undertaking throughout history. Because of environmental variations, some places are definitely better than the others for living and development. In the ancient time, man strived for searching a nice place for settlement which could provide a better resource base. Nowadays, man acquires sciences and technologies to change or even create the environment that makes living pleasant and comfortable. This course provides students with the insights needed to gain an understanding of ideal environment for living from a geographical perspective. Topics include environmental perception, siting and location, urbanization, land use and functions, urban planning, urban design, architecture and interior design. As the course examines the understanding of ideal environment for living from different angles, students will not only gain objective geographical knowledge about the relationship between man and environment, but also learn how some urban challenges and issues are tackled. While the coverage will be broad and pluralistic, examples and cases of mainland China and Hong Kong will be emphasized. In order to enhance the learning experience, an interactive teaching mode will be adopted in the lectures so that the instructors can guide students to analyze the cases and issues through queries and answers.

 

Learning Outcome

After taking this course, students are expected to:

-         be aware of the environmental variations around the world

-         be critical in the pursuit of better, if not ideal, environment for living

-         be familiar with the development of city and the process of urbanization

-         appreciate the beauty and aesthetics of various human settlement forms

-         realize that man must best use his environment and natural resource base on a continuing basis
