Description:
This course offers a broad
interdisciplinary introduction to the Hispanic civilization. It surveys the
realities of Hispanic cultures and societies through the examination of their
evolution, geography, languages, economy, social configurations, artistic ways
of expressions, gastronomy, forms of leisure and celebrations. It attempts to
foster a general understanding of the connections and the differences of
Hispanic cultures and societies geographically separated widely apart. The
course is taught in an interactive manner which engages students in classroom
discussions and projects related to Hispanic issues of their interest. No
prior knowledge in Spanish is required.
Learning
Outcome:
The aim of this
course is to let students explore different aspects of these cultures and societies
and expose them to diverse beliefs, social realities, backgrounds and
attitudes, while comparing with Hong Kong and Chinese customs and traditions.
It is important to remark that only 40 million of speakers out of 400 live in
Spain, being Latin America the place with more native Spanish speakers in the
world. Although the course can not cover all aspects, it will give students
an idea about culture, politics, clothing, food, history, music, art,
climate, landscapes, economy and literature. The objective is to stimulate
students’ thinking about these cultures as well as their own in order to
broaden their horizon and bring them the opportunity to increase their
knowledge about these cultures and countries. At the end of the course
students should be able to have a deeper understanding of these Spanish
speaking countries.
