CUSIS科目資料	Description： This course outlines the global environmental changes confronting modern society and discusses how these changes, if not properly managed, may undermine human sustainability. The course will focus on the inter-relations between the human and physical systems and critically examine the deficiencies of current technological, institutional and societal responses to these environmental challenges. Case studies are used to illustrate the complex nature of sustainability issues. The need for a multidisciplinary approach is also discussed.   Learning Outcome： After successfully completing this course, students will be able:  • To find information related to resources and the environment;  • To analyze sustainability issues and offer solutions; and  • To become more sensitive and responsible to the environment.

CUSIS科目資料	Description： Sustainable development is a global vision for the future. This utopian approach to development should not only generate economic growth, but also distribute its benefits equitably, regenerate the environment rather than destroy it, as well as empower people rather than marginalize them. This course introduces the concept of sustainable development, the evolution of models and the implicit assumptions they make, as well as their contradictions. We examine the emergence of environmental problems and critically review the institutional responses to these problems since the late 1960s. We then consider in detail the increasingly popular idea of sustainable development from different perspectives: ecological, social and economic, as well as global. The final lectures explore how achieving sustainable development depends much on effective planning and good governance. Examples from different parts of the world will be used to underline the tight inter-connections between processes in different regions and across geographical scales in the context of sustainable development. Learning Outcome： After successfully completing this course, the students will be able to: l   Evaluate the conflicting views on the reasons for the lack of a more sustainable development; l   Analyze where the solutions may lay, and the economic, social and environmental constraints to the adoption of these solutions; and l   Comprehend the skills necessary to interpret the policies of governments and international organisations.
